Crown Moldings This is molding that is generally characterized by a slant at the top and the bottom. It is held in place at an angle between the wall and the ceiling. Generally, the bead on the molding is positioned on the lower side, next to the wall. Crown molding softens all the corners where the ceiling meets a wall and adds architectural interest to the room.
Base Moldings This is molding that is unfinished on the bottom surface and is designed to be placed between the wall and the floor. It comes in many different styles and heights. The generally the thicker the molding, the more expensive it will be.
Chair Rail Moldings This molding is finished and can be used right side up or upside down. Why is it called Chair Molding? Because in the old days, it was put on walls to prevent chairs from damaging plaster walls if they were pushed up against the walls. When this type of molding is used to divide a wall horizontally, it’s called wainscotting. Usually, the wall space above the wainscotting is finished differently than the wall below. For example, the lower wall might be paneled in tongue and groove planking.
Case Moldings This molding outlines a door or window and comes in a lot of different varieties. It is finished all the way around. Many times you’ll see two or three different pieces of molding placed side by side on doorways to create the look of a wider molding. You can always add pieces of molding to existing ones to create an expensive look.
